Best Business Class
Etihad
There's a lot of choice in the airline industry vying for your business. Having now flown 3 different carriers in business I can honestly say Etihad come out on top ...by far.
There's Etihad and then there's everyone else. I mean, I've yet to experience Emirates, Qatar or Singapore but honestly, this air carrier is by far the best so far.
My experience started well before I even boarded the plane or even entered the airport.
For a start, I only paid £1800 for a one-way ticket from London to Sydney via Abu Dhabi. The catch? A 16 hour layover in Abu Dhabi. While this may seem like a long time to most, it was definitely worth it. In fact, I reckon this is the key to helping minimising jet lag. That doesn't mean that jet lag won't hit you. I think it hits everyone but it seems to hit me harder now I'm almost 50yo.
The one thing I often forget about flying business is that the price of my ticket is all-inclusive, whereas flying economy, you usually have to pay for any extras you want like food, drink and you're at the behest of the airline when it comes to the timing of food being served...so while you're on board, you need to take advantage of the food offerings when they're served or available.
In business, you're paying for the overall experience which starts from the moment you step foot inside the airport. For a start you have you're own queue for the check in counter, which is often very fast and I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to be served. While they weigh your check in or hold luggage and attached priorty tags around the handle, they rarely check your carry on weight. On this particular flight I was given a maximum weight of 12kg which is quite a lot. I bought one of those portable weight hooks that I could carry with me so I could assess the weight of my baggage no matter where I was or who I was flying with as discounted airlines such as Jetstar in Australia and RyanAir in Europe have very strict weight restrictions, which can often cost you dearly if you're found to be overweight at the airport.
At least I didn't feel as crusty arriving in Sydney if I was if I'd done the whole stint in one go like most other people seem to do. In Abu Dhabi I was able to eat, sleep and have a shower. In fact, I ate a lot...the food was impressive to say the least with generous servings of all kinds of food from bread rolls to hot dishes, salads and dessert. The unlimited free bar is also one of the highlights as airport alcohol can get rather expensive.
