A trip to England isn't complete without a trip back to Roman times...and that means a trip to Bath to see the Roman Baths...but also to enjoy the new modern take on this significant historic site.
A Roman temple was built here in the first few decades of Roman Britain, and up until the 5th century, a public bathing house was here using the geothermal mineral waters from water sourced from rainfall on the hills nearby. The water then percolates down through limestone aquifiers. Geothermal energy raises the water temperature up to about 96C and under pressure, the heated water travels along the faults in the limestone, bubbling up into the grounds of the baths.
Due to health reasons, the original Roman baths are no longer used but a more modern venue was established to allow modern day bathers to enjoy this centuries old tradition. Of course we visited to enjoy the warm, calming waters of the Thermae Bath Spa in the town.
We visited at Easter, 2018, staying in this lovely hotel called The Boat House which was located right on the River Avon, a fair way out of the town. We drove down from Manchester which took us about 4 hours each way.
It was this trip however that was the catalyst for me wanting to buy a boat. My words were "I want to see England but not at £1000 everytime to we go away"
England is a very expensive country to travel in, so a boat seemed like a much better option at the time. In hindsight, I've since realised there is nothing cheap about owning a boat in England. There is nothing cheap about England, period.
